Indian Amla/Gooseberry is a tree that grows in the Middle East and India. The Amla/Gooseberry has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Still today people use the fruit of the tree for making medicines. Amla is known as Gooseberry,Phyllanthus Emblica, Emblic, Emblic Myrobalan, and Dhatrik.

Most people are most familiar with the name of Gooseberry for Amla. Amla Oil is traditionally made by immersing dried Amla fruit in oil. For the base oils usually coconut oil, mineral oil, or sesame oil are used. After soaking for a few days the fruit is removed and the oil is filtered and purified. Amla Oil can have a strong, musky smell. 

The fruit ripens in autumn and are harvested by hand after climbing to upper branches bearing the fruits. The taste of the fruit is a little sour, bitter and astringent, and can be quite fibrous. In India, the fruit is steeped in salt water and turmeric to make the sour fruits palatable.

The various parts of the plant are used to treat a range of diseases; however the most important part is the fruit. The Amla fruit can be used by itself or in combination with other plants to treat many ailments.

The Amla tree is small to medium and reaches 8 to 18 m in height. The Amla flowers are greenish-yellow and the fruit is nearly spherical with a light greenish yellow and six vertical stripes or furrows.

With the medicinal and anti-cariogenic properties of Amla the ancient Ayurveda used fresh stems as herb chewing sticks to prevent diseases. With Amla being a general rebuilder of oral health, stabilize collagen, strengthen the gum tissue. 

Usually in South India the fruit is pickled with salt, oil, and spices. Amla is also eaten raw or cooked into various dishes. In the northern part of India the berries are soaked in sugar syrup for a long time until they are immersed with a sweet flavor and eaten after meals as a dessert.
