What are the Best Essential Oil Combinations?

Creating great essential oil combinations can be considered both science and art. You can’t just throw random oils in a basin and hope they turn out fine. There’s a number of other factors you need to consider.

Aromatic Essential Oil Combinations

Essential oils can be categorized into different groups according to their aromas. For example, Lavender, Neroli and Jasmine can be grouped together due to their floral aroma. Those with earthy scent, on the other hand, such as Vetiver and Patchouli, may be grouped into another. In general, oils that fall under the same category mix well together. There are exceptions, though, and this would depend on your creativity and resourcefulness.

To help you get you started, here are some essential oil combinations that you may want to try:

  • Floral scented oils blend well with spicy (such as Clove, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg), citrus (Orange, Lemon, or Lime) and woodsy (Pine or Cedar) oils.
  • Spicy and oriental oils (such as Ginger and Patchouli) blend well with floral and citrus oils. Just make sure not to let the spicy or oriental oils overwhelm the blend.
  • Minty oils (such as Peppermint and Spearmint) go well with citrus, woodsy, herbaceous (Marjoram, Rosemary, or Basil) and earthy oils.
  • Woodsy oils commonly mix together well with all categories.

Choosing the Right Therapeutic Properties to Blend

Now that you have an idea of which fragrances work well together, ask yourself these questions: Why do you want to combine essential oils? How will you use your essential oil combinations?

The types of oils you blend needs to be determined by what you want to achieve. If it’s a nighttime blend to help you sleep, you should pick oils which have soothing properties. If weight loss is your goal, pick essential oils that have been shown to help you fight fat. The key here is synergy: you want to pick oils that complement each other’s therapeutic properties.

When thinking about mood enhancement, essential oils are generally classified into two groups: stimulating and calming. Examples of essential oils with stimulating effects are Pine and Rosemary, with Pine essential oil having a marked stimulating effect on the adrenal cortex. Rosemary, on the other hand, acts as a strengthening tonic that is suitable for individuals who feel tired and exhausted.

Try this stimulating blend to get you going in the morning:

  • 4 drops Pine
  • 4 drops Black Spruce
  • 2 drops Rosemary
  • 1 drops Ginger

Essential oils with calming effects are those that have sedative properties. Chamomile oil, for example, is useful for easing depression and anxiety. It’s also a good remedy for insomnia. Another essential oil with calming effects is Neroli. It possesses relaxing and sedative properties helpful for reducing irritability and getting rid of unwarranted distress and agitation.

Try this soothing blend to help you drop off at night:

  • 5 drops Chamomile
  • 3 drops Neroli
  • 1-2 drops Lavender

Producing essential oil combinations is an enjoyable and rewarding aspect of aromatherapy. It gives you an avenue to express your creativity. While you’re free to experiment, always remember to choose the best essential oils to blend together. This is very important in creating a synergy that enhances the efficacy of the individual oils. It is recommended that you determine your purpose for the oils and the kind that you need, then look for reliable retailers that sell those oils to ensure good quality.
